![]() Robert Burns Night HistoryBurn's Night seeks to commemorate the birthday and life of one of Scotland’s national poets, Robert Burns. Robert Burns was born 25 January, 1759 in Alloway, Scotland. He found major success at 27 with poems such as To a Louse, To a Mouse, and The Cotter’s Saturday Night. His poetry focused on aspects of farm life, regional experience, traditional culture, class culture, and religious practice. He died in 1796 at 37 years old. Burn's Night was first held in 1801 by his close friends. An evening supper was held in honor of his life. Today, it is common to enjoy the traditional Scottish dish consisting of haggis (a savory pudding containing meat, onion, and spices) and scotch whisky. Along with the meal, many people will recite Robert Burn’s poetry. This holiday is recognized by the Scottish Parliament as a key cultural event. It is celebrated annually on 25 January.
